Nirvana
In Buddhism, nirvana is the highest state that someone can attain, a state of enlightenment, meaning a person's individual desires and suffering go away.
Woodcut printmaking is an art of carving away—removing the negative space to reveal the entity, just like nirvana, to let it go, to enjoy the process. carving lines, inking the block, pressing paper—echo the discipline of meditation. The rhythmic labor induces a state of mindfulness. Each print, though from the same block, is slightly different, Like life, no impression is ever the same. The block holds the image—like the self holds the seed of awakening. When inked and pressed, that image manifests beyond the block, just as nirvana is a state beyond the self.
